    Default Photoshop image questions.

Hi everyone. How the hell are you? So....I got a book deal.. It's on the history of Beer in Seattle. A large chunk of the book will be historical photos. I have a few that I want to use that are from a printed magazine from the 50's. These photos scanned would be borderline acceptable for the book due to them being sourced from a previously printed photo and relatively small in size. Does anyone have any tricks they do on photoshop to improve a image like this?

The publishers require that a normal image scanned for publication need to be scanned at least 300dpi. should I scan these over a 1,000 dpi? Is there a filter on photoshop to smooth out the printed dots of the image a little?

Thanks for your help guys. take care!

I've found scanners have really good "descreening" options.

Otherwise just follow one of these:

My darling daughter designed this book, it has quite a lot of scanned images from magazines and older sources that were probably from printed images

if you want, contact me and I'll put you in touch with her, you can ask her for some tricks etc.

OH, and it's a great book - full of fascinating stuff, and beautifully designed (proud papa!) of course.

Scan at a res at least twice as high as you'll need, apply a noise filter. This breaks up the dots. Resize it (smaller) and run an unsharp mask filter at 100% preview to taste.

    That's what I've always done.
