Scanning old magazines, comics, etc...

Any tips on this? Been making a lot of collage lately and have a great scanner but not sure what is the best way to scan in the final image. Or for just scanning old images and photos from old magazines to use in regular design work... I haven't actually done much of it so what are the tips to make it look chaunky (bad) but still pro? Want to flex some design muscle but also "make it look weird".

Any thoughts?

scan at a higher dpi than the original so the halftone patterns don't get ganked. I usually scan at 600dpi.
