anyone know about setting up monitors for mac?

so, my imac's screen has gone to the tits so i've got an external screen which seems to be doing the job just fine. i've calibrated it all ok, that was no problem, and it looks spot on when using it as an extension of my desk top, but when mirroring the displays it's a bit fuzzy. images are as sharp as a button, but text and stuff to do with the OS are doing my eyes in. i've got both screens on full resolution. anybody have any idea why this would be happening? like i say, it's really crisp when using it as an extension of the imac...

ok, managed the fuzziness problem. now i've realized that everything's a bit stretched. anyone know how to fiddle with the aspect ratio...? any help would be massively appreciated...
