OK .. here's the scoop...
I have always had a strong feeling about website 'functionality' being FAR more important than design. It is evident here at gigposters.com... no Flash, no cool graphics.. concentration on information, and navigation, etc.. I was recently lead me to this site: http://www.coma2.com No offence Al, but this site, TO ME .. is crap. Why .. because it is not evident how to get anywhere from first arrival.. useless. I spent minutes (which are hours in 'surfing' time) trying to figure out what is what.. where to go .. letting shitty Flash load up .. and managing pop-up windows, etc.. There are SO many sites out there, by design students, that (to me) have no purpose, content or functionality .. they are just there as a 'portfolio' .. or because someone was bored.. useless info clogging up this web of ours. Sorry .. I don't mean to be an absolute asshole on the situation .. I just need someone to explain to me the other viewpoint.. <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Clay on 2002-07-19 20:35 ]</font> |

whoe...hey hold on there...i didnt put the link up for its ease of navigation or information arch. what i was doing was sending you a site to check out what people are doing with some code...making interactive apps and such...sheez man...can do no right on this here site...i agree a site like gigposters has no room for this kind of thing but on the other hand its cool to see what some people can create with the knowledge they have...flash.. i like it...i ve heard all the arguments against it...but its o.k. in my book...i just thought you might like what someone did with a little knowledge of different coding techniques....gonna hold off on eatin dick right now Frank...ease up man, just an example of how other people might express themselves.

sorry Al...dont take it personal. I just hate that 'all hat no cattle' SFDIGIGEEK
flash for its sake hogwash. I cherish the web for INFORMATION and CONNECTIVITY. when thats cast aside in a grandiose display of smoke and mirrors it gets me pissed off. I do pay a whole goddamn 69 dollars a month for my hook up. |

heh. you found one of frank's "buttons"...
you wanted the other side of the debate... well, i'll defend the technology, but not the execution. 49% of the time those idiotic flash presentations and assorted dancing baloney are specifically dictated by clients. 49% of the time it's kids who found a new toy and go hog wild with it. there is indeed a time and place for everything, but that's a lesson that only the remaining 2% have realized. i've worked as a low-level sysadmin, a pro web designer (don't look at my site - it's unfinished and 2 years out of date), and a usability consultant, so i've had to listen to every side of the debate. it always comes down to 'the right tool for the job' - but people don't want to listen to that. at any rate, GP rules for all the reasons frank cited. the only things i could possibly nitpick about are a more detailed search ad maybe fixing the few minor display issues on Mac, but none of that takes away from the amazing amount of content collection yinz have spearheaded. IT'S ALL ABOUT CONTENT. and, of course, beef. |
