Hold down the button on your mouse and move your hand from one window to another then let go of the mouse.

What version(s) are you using? Did it stop working altogether or is it possible certain types of layers work and others don't?

I think this is something that started at CS1 and has been improved since (before then I don't think you could drag between programs, but you could do some copy/pasting that was generally ill-advised). Nowadays the crossover is considerable and if you drag shapes / vector-masked layers from PS to AI they'll maintain their vector integrity.

Let us know more about what's going on if you're still having trouble and it's something worth pursuing -- as others have mentioned there are other ways to go about this, including pasting and exporting paths to illustrator, saving the layer as a file and placing, etc.

i'm using the cs4 versions of both... this was working a few days ago, dragging a layer from photoshop into illustrator...

today, it doesn't. i can drag a text layer into illustrator. i can drag a channel selection. but i can't drag a layer. i've been saving a layer out, then opening with illustrator. works, but not being able to just drag the effing layer is making me crazy.

posted this to the adobe illustrator forum... no one knows what might be happening over there either. thought it might be a corrupt preference file...
