Um... the real band is the one that sounds like a real band, and the fake one is the one that sounds like a parody.
It's not rocket science.
Like I said, I enjoy Dethklok. Metalocalypse is a funny show.
But I have less than zero interest in seeing "them" play live.
Because "they" are not "they." Among other things.
It makes a huge difference.
It makes the difference between me going to the show, and me not going to the show.
I have about as much interest in seeing a bunch of dudes quote Monty Python sketches back and forth to one another, as I do in seeing Dethklok "play live."

"Every single Crosshair poster I've ever seen is almost exactly the same. Do these guys even have a bit of creativity in them? I mean, come one - shitty old building pics photoshopped with text over them. Pretty pathetic to say the least."
"it just seems like so little effort is put into creating this? am i missing something?"
Oh Christ almighty just go to the damned metal show. It's fucking metal. Everything louder than everything else. And, the last time I checked, almost all metal is a parody and almost all metal dudes are cartoons. It'll be good. It'll be fun. It'll be loud. And 'Dethklok' will play in an almost all black stage with a few very small floor lights on. Now everyone can commence griping about how they don't like Mastodon's new 'singing' voice and wish they would just scream all the time.
no way, i dont believe you for a second, that 10-second-or-so instrumental clip sounds like a "real" metal band. I'll admit, that if there were vocals, it'd be easier to pick out (the most cut and dry satire aspect of the outfit) but as it stands, it's straight metal.
i suppose i understand the cartoon aspect making or breaking the deal, when going to see them live, but the guys playing the music are the guys who wrote AND perform all the music in the show/on the album. it's not like watching dudes stand on stage quote monty python, it's like watching monty python on stage quoting monty python.
basically, brendon small writes and performs all the music himself (with help here and there). so he performs it with other musicians under the pseudonym of an animated band. so? i just don't understand the huge divide here.
and to say it is a parody (which it is, i will grant you that) hardly makes them less legitimite. Metal is one of the most ridiculous, theatric, over-the-top genres in music. it doesn't take much to cross that parody line. dethklok just pushes the envelope of absurdity slightly further. i think the fact that mastodon, high on fire, etc have opened for them proves this.
yes THANK you taliban
...
Please educate me further about this "heavy metal" music.
I am particularly interested in hearing more about how irony and parody figure into legitimacy.
