I totally understand how people are inclined to reject huge bands b/c I used to be the same way. It's especially easy to make assumptions and dismissals -- I'm still guilty of this to some extent (especially when it comes to pop country). But it's a shame that lots of folks are inevitably ignoring music they may very well love. Floyd's catalog is big and very diverse musically so they're often pigeonholed by folks who might actually dig the hell outa stuff they never heard.

If you reject art (music) for anything other than the art in and of itself, that's stupid but understandably common. Ideally, I don't care about how big or small a band is, what the fuck they wear, what their cool back-story is -- that stuff can be interesting but it's all peripheral (at best contextual) and obscures and distorts perception of the music itself I think. There's no "objectivity" in the consumption of art but to just listen to something without any knowledge of where it came from can be liberating.

I've noticed recently how much just the name of a band immediately shapes my perception/receptiveness to them. For example I didn't expect to like Iron & Wine (I do, a lot) while I had a feeling I'd like Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears (I really really do). That's pretty off-topic come to think of it.

Woa, thanks for the heads up! I'm gonna track that down for sure.

Good to see lots of Meddle love on this thread -- definitely my favorite Floyd album too. Far from cohesive in the way that WYWH or Dark Side (or most others) are but it's just righteous. My favorite tune is actually San Tropez... I can't explain why, just love that tune.

Anyone ever synced up the last part of Space Odyssey ("Jupiter") with Echoes? Far better and more convincing than Dark Side + Wizard of Oz. I used to have it as an .mpg but can't find that fucker now.
