I'm just kidding of course. Everyone knows Eric "SlowHands" Clapton kicked off the craze with "I Shot The Sheriff".

that's was a cover, tom.
sting started reggae.
You should check out the 101'ers record that just got re-released -- it's Strummer's pre-punk/pre-Clash/pre-dental work band, good stuff.
I'm kind of a Clash freak. I went on a rejuvenated Clash spree when they remastered the catalog. Went from listening to them to Really listening to them. One of the only bands i own every release from. oh, besides The Birthday Party and Sabbath. and Black Flag....and the Replacements. F*ck, nevermind.
Like Tom, I love me some Joe Strummer. Do any of you own the soundtrack to Permanent Record? Four great Joe Strummer songs on there. The song "Trash City" just kills. I saw Joe Strummer at a Tom Waits show. In the audience. I was leaving the bar and he was walking toward it. He gave me a nod and said, "Hey, mate." I walked away giggling like a little girl.
someone looking for me?

johnny rotten never liked the clash. he thought they were a bunch of fashion victims who really couldn't sing. funny stuff.
the sex pistols fought the culture wars that strummer only fantasized about. jes' the facks, m'am.
My nine year old daughter LOVES Joe Strummer and specifically the last Mescaleroes LP that was released posthumously. And I am in agreement with her.
Rotten's beef was/is that Strummer was a diplomat's son playacting at being poor, living in squats when he didn't have to, etc. The book The Last Gang in Town goes into painful detail showing the Clash's attempt to whitewash their own past in an attempt to appear more "street." I still like 'em, though.Originally Posted by art chantry

"rotten" calling someone else a poseur is laughable.
