I used to work with a guy who was his nephew. Interesting guy.

tiny tim is a really interesting historical character. we all knew him as a freakshow comedy act, but early on in his life, he was a considered a major music historian and folkie star. in that dylan biography film that was on tv recently (the scorsese one), you'll notice tim's face popping up in the old old footage of early greenwich village folk scene stuff. he was a weirdo and a strange creepy guy back then, too. but, he was also considered a treasure trove of early forgotten american music, especially the stuff associated with parlor songs/tin pan alley/sheet music/uekeleli stuff. other old folkies considered him a peer and he was treated with respect and had a big underground following. he even had long hair years and years before everybody else.

later, when he became a freak fixture on rowan and martin's laugh-in, and then his neurotic obsessions took over his life. he became a laughing stock, and he tried to make a living off that. but, his early days were quite respectable and very influential.

weird life. but an important musician, believe it or not.

of course, you're right. eden ahbez was the original "singing nature boy". but, he wasn't part of the ny folkie scene. he lived in the woods and ate rocks, right? there's always been a nature boy out there somewhere huckstering their diet programs and clean living philosphy. but as far as urban scenesters, tiny tim (whose hair was long and straight like he always wore it) was way ahead of the curve, nonetheless. (i liked saying 'nonetheless").
