I agree that people can like whatever they want.
But I have a problem when people call themselves "music fans" and only listen to what the radio/MTV slams down their throats.
If you are a real music fan you seek out new & different music.

a music fan, especially a self described one, is just that: a fan of music. no matter how broad or narrow their knowledge of music is, they still like what they hear.

music that "nobody has heard" doesn't make it good music either.

a lot of my friends/relatives that listen to the radio and watch mtv don't like ANY of the music i listen to. and i'm not gonna cram it down their throats. what's the point?

if my sister likes jessica simpson and avril lavine, well, tough shit. that's who she likes. and there are MILLIONS of people like that, and you're not better than them for liking "indie rock".

Point taken about music fans.
I went all "Music Snob" for a minute there.

As for my bitching about people complaining about music they never heard of; I think it has more to do with being asked to DJ a party (for free) when I don't really want to. And being asked to do a favor and then be criticized for how I do it when I'd rather be having a good time with every one else.
If you could even call what I do DJing. All I do is play songs from My iPod.
And it is filled with stuff that I don't really listen to so that when I do get asked to do it I can try to appeal to as many peoples tastes as I can.
