1. that god awful deal is insanely good
2. never offer promotion as payment
3. one of you guys should make your own flyers, stay away from photoshop, stay away from other people's posters/artwork, and make friends with a copy machine. even if they suck, they'll suck in your own way or you might find out that you can make something interesting.
They keep strict tabs on that stuff and only let you do it twice a week. Not to sob story or anything but I've had a cold this past week and they turn you away if you even sniffle. I get it though, you all deserve to be paid what you are worth and if I was rich or even a middle class I would pay up. It's not like I don't know about the blood, sweat, and tears you put into your art. I do it too, just in a different medium.
Thanks for the advice. I actually have made 90% of the stuff for our band so I wasn't sure how it works here. Just thought I'd test the waters here a little more and see how it worked. With musicians we tend to work with bands who help each other out through promotion with each other. It's not a bad system but maybe it doesn't fly in this community?
Someone here said they would take the job and I trust them so it's all good. Still, thanks for the tips and I probably will do my own art still. Live and learn...
Find a mopey, black-clad art student at one of your shows. Let them hang out and smoke your drugs and drink your beer. Ask them to do some flyers for you and eventually a 7" or CD cover. That sort of symbiosis has sustained many a band and art student until both reached a level where they get paid what they're worth. You play heavy rock, surely someone in your circle can draw a skull or two. Good luck.
At least you offered at least a little cash RawMojo, I'll give you that. But if one of your band mates is unemployed, tell them to grab some old magazines and newspapers and start cutting and pasting letters and words together and pick up an old notebook and start drawing. Gotta start somewhere and it sounds like they could use the time productively for their one paying gig. Just a thought. DIY.
