For a moment I considered crafting a submission to Obama For America's poster contest. I voted for him. I understand that it's a donation. I even donated money to his 2008 campaign.
The contest is for a poster to promote Obama's JOBS program. Yes, of course I want more jobs in America. So I thought about designing a poster. After all, I'm a famous poster artist. My first thought was - How will I prioritize this? When I put this on my To Do list, it will be listed there next to a bunch of other jobs that pay money. Naturally, it will come last.
I was disappointed. How can I put enough energy and resources into such a project to make it compelling? I can't. Then I heard that the Obama campaign has over $80 million in its coffers, presumably to pay for advertising. So, what is this poster, if not advertising?
Then I thought, what if I lose? I can't even recycle the concept for another JOB. All submissions become the property of Obama For America.
HEY WAIT A MINUTE! This is supposed to promote the JOBS program!?
I DON'T THINK SO. It's not as if I'm one of the 1%. Who do they think I am? Do they think artists and designers haven't suffered enough in the Great Recession?
Do you think this is as stupid as I do?
