Steinbeck was an amazing writer. Of Mice and Men was such a brilliant story, and really showed the strife of life felt by those in depression-era America. The Moon is Down also is very good, as well as The Grapes of Wrath and Cannery Row. The man was a genius.

i agree, although i never really got into the moon is down. great story behind it, though, dropping it behind enemy lines to get people into joining the underground movement during wwII. i'm a fan of "in dubious battle" and "the winter of our discontent".
