I shipped all of my poster stock from SF to NY a few months ago - about 53 boxes. 5 grand in shipping. Insured out the wazoo. I cataloged every box and its contents.

When they arrived boxes were missing, torn open and beat to shit. The UPS guy left it all at my studio door without my signature. I photographed every box and called UPS to complain and they said the guy got my signature and were trying to tell me there was nothing they could do. The UPS guy even came to my studio and asked why I was calling him a liar and that all the boxes were in perfect condition when he delivered them. He forged my signature.

Still resolving the issue with their insurance people.

The UPS delivery dude hates me and gives me the look of death whenever he sees me now.

Some of my posters are now unintentionally 'rare'. C'est la vie.

The way the crate was constructed you could pile anything you wanted on it. It could go vertically, upside down, and at a 45º angle and everything would have been fine. The only way to do what was done to this crate was to unpack it using a screw gun. Then unpack all the smaller packages inside. Run a dolly over the loose paper and then shove it in a box.

We crate every day. And nothing like this has ever happened.

i am good friends with my UPS driver. he told me if i want to ship UPS and have no damage is to ship it UPS blue. that way your package doesn't go to the sorting center. he also said, what ever you do, don't write 'fragile' on the package. that is just a taunt for them to jack it up.

any shipment ewing's size i would have shipped on a freight truck. way safer and most likely a whole lot cheaper. UPS has never paid us back for broken packages. all they do is send a rep out and say it wasn't packed well enough.

I have a UPS "investigator" on the case. Good luck to me with the holiday weekend coming.

I've only had one claim denied by UPS, technically it was our fault for not packing it to their specs.

yeah you are right about air shipments getting there in better shape and not putting fragile stickers on them.

i've had all sorts of ups problems over the years. very unreliable. i don't use them at all.

strangely, the best and most reliable experience i've had over the last 35+ years of shipping artwork and stuff like that has been the usps. the post office has never once lost or destroyed anything for me. been a day or two slower than the competition, but, i don't much care about that - i have patience.

the second most reliable is fedex. the only problem is when i sent cash. that would always disappear en route. usually an empty envelope shows up, especially since 911 with xrays and those metal strips in the currency. they can spot that shit now and it always gets stolen. other than that, they've been 100%.

NOW UPS destroyed half of my TW Graphics Ink shipment. I just got a call from TW saying that my ink was undeliverable. TW will sort that out for me but I've got to send somebody to the store to go buy base. Today is slowly working it's way up on my worst day ever list. Thank you UPS
