so, i guess i'm not yet convinced that the typeface in contention really is a smoking gun. it could very well have been an old typeface re-named as "comic sans". more research is needed.
Comic Sans was created by some engineer at MicroSoft back in 1994. It was inspired by comic book lettering and was banged out in like a day or two. It is not a recut of an older typeface.

Art, you go on about these old type books that show similar specimens. Great, that proves nothing. Find one that matches this, scan it and post it (I know you can do it, I have faith in you). Then we can all see for ourselves.

If you find one that matches this exactly, you'll make a believer out of me.

    brainiac -

you seem to have confused me with somebody who gives a shit.

i just thought the dialog was interesting and all.

i'm just remaining skeptical until proven beyond a doubt.

i think the year is just the first red flag. very rare to have it on at that time but....... could happen.

altho there is a lot that i can see in this that makes it look legit here are the concerns for me:

    -the year on it
-the "comic sans". as art said there were tons of similar fonts before '78 but...... nothing i've seen that so exactly mirrors it. anybody have any pre-'78 examples ????? ( especially a L, A, N or D ).
-the promoter saying that a flyer never existed ( ...... altho at the time there was a lot of fan produced advertising to promote punk gigs. whole different can of worms to open there ).
-the amount of diversity in fonts at relatively the same size. i used to try and do the ransom lettering thing as a kid ( early 80s. roughly the same time period ). not easy to find that amount of diversity at approx the same point size without a huge shitload of mags from a ton of different interest topics.

    dunno.

anchoresse, you have gone a long way to show the poster is fake by overlaying comic sans.

I want Art to show us it might be real with an old specimen.
