On the b&w layer go image>adjustments>invert then go to your layer pallet and select the pulldown menu option, change "normal" to "multiply" and place your photo on another layer under it.

the easiest way to do this is to just goto edit>Define brush preset and then just use the brush to put it over whatever it is you're wanting it on - in white - easy steasy

Macthulu's way is the best and fastest way. The white stays white and nothing behind it distorts in any way. That's what I always do.
