On the b&w layer go image>adjustments>invert then go to your layer pallet and select the pulldown menu option, change "normal" to "multiply" and place your photo on another layer under it.

It's going over a photo, right? Once it's in place, you can tweak it via curves or levels to eliminate any grays that show up funny. Otherwise, it should work. It's one of those modes I've only used a few times, so maybe I'm missing something.

the easiest way to do this is to just goto edit>Define brush preset and then just use the brush to put it over whatever it is you're wanting it on - in white - easy steasy

There are 1000023458340589 ways to do the same thing in photoshop. Out of all the things mentioned you should be able to get it.

Macthulu's way is the best and fastest way. The white stays white and nothing behind it distorts in any way. That's what I always do.
