I had kind of the opposite reaction to the realism. For instance, "Gotham" just seemed kind of bland and banal to me. It was just Chicago. There was nothing dark or sinister about it in any way and I found it took me out of the story. You have this "dark knight" but he's in this clean, normal city.

The Joker was, indeed, spectacular. Stupid asshole Ledger had to go and kill himself.
It was a clean and normal city because the batman was working, progress was taking place the drug dealers were scared - that was the point.

Oh, and this WAS the best comic book movie ever made and one of the best action/crime thrillers ever made, EVER.

But Gotham never loses that edge. It was too bland. I know it sounds odd but it was too realistic. I mean, it's Batman. It shouldn't be the French Connection.

I agree with the clean city thing. It was distracting.

Anyone catch this? Maybe I'm reading into things too much, but it appears that Wayne Enterprises was contracted by the government to develop sonar surveillance systems that use cell phones. Part of FISA?

That was the whole crux of why Lucius Fox quit. Because he couldn't agree with Batman accessing everyone in Gotham's phones for surveillance of the Joker. It has that whole rejection of "security at any price" that the NSA and the Phone Companies colluding to wiretap and listen in on everyone's phones because of the War on Terror.

    It's brilliant, really.

    I dunno...
I thought there was too much blatant social commentary.

The Joker was well played. Two face was cool. Batman's voice was annoying as hell.

The movie got off to a great start. At the end, I started yawning.

    Too much hype.

    .
When the sonar phone thing kicked in, I rolled my eyes at Hollywood's thinly-veiled attempt to jab back at the FISA stuff. Plus all the "people are good/bad" crap sorta bugged me when they were saying it all out loud. It's like there's no inner monologue or basic understandings. Everything had to be announced. Got tiring.
