You can transfer files via USB.. I do it daily!

You need "DiskAid" on your mac and "FileAid" on your iPhone!

You can but I don't recommend it - I used mine in Hamburg and got a bill for $3500(!) that was refunded after I complained bitterly.

If you can unlock iPhones now - last i heard you can't - then getting a local SIM would be the way to go.
