They used the open source bluetooth stack which has all 25 profiles available, and they purposely disabled all but two of them.

They used something that in stock form is 100% enabled, and they turned all the good stuff off. It would have been easier to leave it stock. So, it was a business decision or something.

Bluetooth - the radio-based communications system used by headsets, etc. for wireless connections - has a number of different functions. 25 all told. Here is a breakdown of what the iphone can and cannot do.

iPhone Supports:

Hands-Free Profile (HFP)
Headset Profile (HSP)

iPhone Does Not Support:

Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
Basic Imaging Profile (BIP)
Basic Printing Profile (BPP)
Cordless Telephony Profile (CTP)
Device ID Profile (DID)
Dial-up Networking Profile (DUN)
Fax Profile (FAX)
File Transfer Profile (FTP)
General Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP)
Generic Access Profile (GAP)
Generic Object Exchange Profile (GOEP)
Human Interface Device Profile (HID)
Intercom Profile (ICP)
Object Push Profile (OPP)
Personal Area Networking Profile (PAN)
Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP)
Serial Port Profile (SPP)
Service Discovery Application Profile (SDAP)
SIM Access Profile (SAP,SIM)
Synchronisation Profile (synch)
Video Distribution Profile (vdp)
Wireless Application Protocol Bearer (WAPB)

All those things - like sending and receiving files, or using the phone as a modem, etc - it doesn't do work normally on other phones and would work on the iphone too, if Apple hadn't turned them all off. On purpose.

What purpose, I don't know.

ah, while i still don;t understand what a lot of the things that are not available on the iphone do. it does seem odd that they would have disabled that many features.

Maybe they're trying to eliminate them and develop some new shit. Leaving it up to consumers to either buy the iphone or buy another phone that may not be able to relate that well with one another.

I heard shazam is pretty good too. Ill download that one later.

The only app I paid for was flickr app and it rules!

between that and learning about igoogle homepage last week i feel like i am as smart as the smart people here were a year ago.
