I love his stuff. You can definitely see a trajectory from Duchamp to him.
I had the honor of having on of his pieces in my office when I worked at an university. The university had a great collection of art that they lent out to private offices on campus. I was waffling between picking his piece and a Robert Longo. It was a collage done in 1970. Newspaper clippings and ads for porno/exploitation movies.

wow...a lot of folks i work with will be sad to hear it. I've gotten to work with some of his combines before and have heard plenty tales. he lived a good one...cheers rausch
any la-ers, there's a small rauschenberg collection up at moca, and they are all fabulous pieces
