Thought this story was interesting in relation to the vegan/meat eater discussions on the boards lately....

It's not easy being green - just hear your plants scream
    From Roger Boyes in Berlin

TREAD softly in the garden and pluck that rose with care: flowers cry when cut, cucumbers squeal and even healthy fruit gurgles according to new acoustic research on the stressful life of plants.

The findings, released by the Institute for Applied Physics at the University of Bonn, could have important implications for farmers since, with the proper eavesdropping device, one can now distinguish between healthy and sick vegetables. Talking to plants, it seems, is not as rewarding as listening to them.

The Bonn scientists have developed laser-driven microphones that pick up sounds inaccessible to the human ear. When a leaf or a stem is sliced, the plant signals pain (or perhaps merely dismay) by releasing the gas ethylene over its entire surface.

If we were supposed to only eat plants our eyes would be on the sides of our heads.

    OMNIVORE ALL THE WAY BABY!!!

And somebody said on one forum that we weren't supposed to be meat eaters 'cause we weren't born with the digestive juices to breakdown meat...that comes later. Well duh, were supposed to feed off our mothers at birth, not eat meat. we don't have the teeth to do it either.

    I'm getting hungry for steak!

well, eating meat actually has everything to do with our current state as being the dominant predator on the planet. First of, meat is the most efficient source of food for us, as it contains all 20 essential amino acids plus proteins and fats necessary to fuel our one dominant organ-the brain. The human brain uses up 20% of all the energy we need to survive, more than any other physical system, and essentially we inhabit our ulta-successful ecological niche(short-term anyway) due to our
huge brains, of which our eyes are the external part of. This giant brain and hyper-useful ability to see in color anf make 3-d sense of the environment makes us all the latest round of the best killing machines ever seen. Vegetarianism is a really nice 'moral' point of view, but s only made possible by the fact taht we live in a gigantically wasteful society that allows us nice veggies cheap and fresh year round...no 'natural' pre-industrial group of people was ever vegetarian...the problem is eating too much all the time, not the act itself. after all, what do you think our incisors are for, husking coconuts?

-relishing the screams of turnips......and the sad, pathetic bleating of carrots as they wait, huddled for the fangs of the DeathBunny...
