I know Outkast is widely respected as one of the greats. Where should I start?

At the beginning. I definitely recommend going through their discography chronologically. Really nice progression.

I agree...Southernplaylisticadillacmusik is in my opinion their best....Dre didn't have to dress all crazy, but there's still a sign of things to come.
Although the rest are great too. If your going to be looking for good albums, I'd recommend Wu Tang - 36 Chambers Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt 50 Cent - Guess Who's Back and other Who Kid stuff ...alot of the same stuff as Get Rich or Die Trying except more raw Doggie Style and the Chronic Murs 3:16 - The End of the Beginning Cage - Movies for the Blind UGK - Super Tight Fugee's Andre Nickatina - Alot of Stuff... I've been listening to hip hop forever so there's a ton more, but those are some of the ones that come to mind. But then again I've been told I have horrible taste so listen at your own discretion. |

Aside from Cage and 36 Chambers, there's nothing on there that ever got me going. To each their own though. My list: El-P Mr. Lif Third Sight Kool Keith MF Doom Cannibal Ox Immortal Technique Aceyalone Analog Brothers Beat Junkies Dalek Swollen Members ODB Jedi Mind Tricks J Dilla Of course there are the classics: NWA, Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC (pre-Raising Hell), Whodini, EPMD, Company Flow, Paris, Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, and a ton others. I grew up in Michigan so as far as techno it's DJ Assault, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Aux 88, Derrick May, Delta 9 (Chicago), Disco D, Terrence Dixon, Juan Atkins. Also a big fan of Kid606. |

Assault's the grandfather of ghetto-tech. There's noone better. UGK is pretty tight though. |
