I think Art just about summed up the 70's there. Big fucking mess, nowhere to stand and everyone too tripped out and wasted to know they were flirting with a dragqueen
priceless

like i said, purple microdot. i saw every arena band of the era. the only one i found truly terrible was foghat. apparently there wasn't enough acid in the world to make them enjoyable live. the rest just took a hit or two.
the bands we went to go see religiously were like the stones, the who, jethro tull (early on a GREAT live act), alice cooper, faces, black sabbath, mountain, zztop, ten year after. when bowie came to town, he played a small venue and only 100 folks showed up. t.rex played to a packed house, though.
but, i gotta tell ya. i was so glad when punk came along. suddenly there were good bands to see playing for a buck in a storefront or basement and it was suddenly great to go to a show. it was like everything you'd been hoping, DYING for suddenly became real. god, i hated those 70's bands.
i know you little kids think the 70's stuff was cool. but, damn you should been there. you'd hate it, too.
led zep sux.
Black Sabbath at Winterland in 77 was great .
i saw sabbath on their first american tour in 1970. they blew the headliners (mountain) off the stage. they were great back then in the olden days, before the drugs kicked in and the visons of rabid vampire bats took over.
Shit, at least stuff like Zep survived...our grandkids will be wearing Led Zep tshirts when they're 15 (unless they're nerds). Meanwhile, I am TERRIFIED at what's going to survive and come to typify "my" generation (I was born in '80). Like, what's going to be the background song in car commercials of 2025? Backstreet Boys? Nirvana? Britney? All of that sucks so hard. I hope no kid ever asks me what it was like going to a Hootie and the Blowfish concert.
when i caught onto punk, no one else would listen to it with me. i was a greasy white boy growing up in the midwest with greasy white boy buddies. these 70s bands were what we had, what the radio played. i listened to shit then that i laugh out loud about when i think of it now. somehow 'rainbow' just doesn't stand the test of time. i did see some great punk shows at smaller venues, but for the most part, i kinda didn't get it. it took me a couple of years to figure out what was cool about punk, and by then, i was already in california.
i jut remember cruising around drinking beer (too young for taverns, too old for hi school) cruisng the radio for anything, i mean ANYTHING to listen to. it nothing but gag puke on the radio. there weren't even OLDIES STATIONS to listen to. the only music we had was an 8track and bunch of stones tapes. we'd drive out in the foothills where the cops left us alone, drunker than skunks just looking for ANYTHING to do. we got into fights, we sneaked into roadhouses, we crashed parties. utter boredom and no future. when the pistols and the ramones came along it was like FINALLY something fucking HEAVY to deal with. god, you kids have NO idea how lucky you are to have the shit sitting around to listen to, to watch, to do, to explore. there was NOTHING back then. i remember discovering the stooges and then they were already gone. pfft! just like that. i felt abandoned by my own "culture."
don't worry about legacy. there's tons of good stuff out there. you guys are so lucky.
