League puts Flyers on notice; Cote suspended
By ED MORAN Philadelphia Daily News morane@phillynews.com The Flyers have been put on notice by the NHL. After Riley Cote was handed a three-game suspension for a head shot to Dallas forward Mat Niskanen in Saturday's game, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren that the league would be watching the Flyers closely. "I talked to [Bettman] today. He thinks, like I do, that these are different coincidences, different situations, that have to be viewed differently, but the question was raised about ramifications if it happens again," Holmgren told the Daily News. "So obviously we're under watch." Cote was the fifth Flyer to be suspended for making dangerous hits to the head of opposing players. "[Cote] crossed the line and he knows it. I think three games was fair," Holmgren said. Holmgren said the team would be told that it has no more room for incidents and "it will be discussed." The suspensions began when Steve Downie drew a 20-game penalty on Sept. 28 for a head shot to Ottawa's Dean McAmmond during the preseason. That was followed by a 25-game suspension for Jesse Boulerice on Oct. 12 for crosschecking Vancouver's Ryan Kesler in the face. Randy Jones drew two games on Oct. 29 for a hit from behind to Boston's Patrice Bergeron. Scott Hartnell received a two-game ban for a hit on Boston's Andrew Alberts on Nov. 26. *
