    i have opinions.
serrato is an interesting tool. my experience with it is very limited. it seems to make djing a lot easier, since it'll beat match for you. me? i'm personally more impressed by 2 records, manually matched. the interface is good, and i like the idea of "records" as controls. but, like i said, it depends on how it's used, i guess.

I agree with rock, there's nothing like two tech 12's spinnin, but having a third table with serato running would add so much more to your show.

Nick Nack uses it and I was impressed. Got to see him spin at the Blanton with it and request damn near any song I could think of.

yup, it can be used really well, i know mel uses it too...i think nearly everyone does. i saw diplo use it too. it's convenient too, i guess-you don't have to lug your records on tour with you, stuff like that, having any song you could imagine...
i went and saw a dj this weekend. he played all the internet jamz, the internet mashups. my pal said he heard him go to record, and totally blow his blend...but the moment he switched to mp3 he seemed to be pretty on point. makes it even easier to be a club dj.
i have totally mixed feelings about it, but it is the future of mixing, and methods i've adopted, technology i've used, like an adjustable cross-fader, could have been viewed with the same trepidation and off-the-cuff disdain by people mixing longer than me.

although the music is all stored on the comp its basically still "spinning" two records togther though right?

I mean youre still using two records and a mixer

technically, yeah. but as far as i've seen, and granted, i've only messed with it once, you can still cue up your mp3s well in advance, and beat match them through the program. so you're basically using the 'record' as a play button, although you can still pull them back, or scratch or whatever. you can choose the option to also have the needle drop 'move' on the tune the same way it moves on the record, or have it pause and pick back up on the song where it left off, controlled by the needle drop, regardless of it's placement on the 'record'.
i'm sure there's all kinds of other things you can do with it, too.

The only way I alter the bpm of a record is to vary the degree of pressure on the disc itself using the tip of a raw hot dog. I call this "laying a bead".

Most Serato users i know don't have tracks pre-beat matched. Granted, they come from years of rocking vinyl so they are puirsts.

#1 reason why it is great = cost of vinyl vs cost of mp3 and it's convenience.

My brother spins weekly at a local club and has been rocking Serato for 6 months now. My favorite part about this is that he can be setting up his laptop at home 10 minutes before his gig and i can
tell him about a track that would be prefect for his set and he can get it in minutes and throw it down in his set. Hell, he could be downloading beats on his way to the club in his car!

it is just another tool. The popularity of CDJ's got the same heat. I don't care what a DJ uses as long as the mix is on and the tracks move the floor, it really doesn't matter.
