Steal would be unbearable in the Florida summer I bet. I'd go with skatelite as well.
And that thing looks gnarly. I love those Frankenramps. Always the most fun crazy ass lines.
most of the ramps in florida are covered in steel. gainsville, orlando, kona, stone edge, the trannies of tampa. just a little warm and slick, but quick coke mop and it's good.
neighbours are probably thrilled... ha

Think that thing is 6'? 7'? I'm guessing by the ladder shown on the right hand side.
I just cleared a bunch of land to start building a mini ramp. I'm thinking I'm gonna start with a 4' high, 12' wide, mellow trannies. My son is 3 now, and he can scoot around the kitchen and stuff on my board. I want to start with something simple for him to start riding, but not something too easy, you know? I might put some real small quarters on either side of the flat bottom to help teach him to drop in. Eventually, we'll bowl out the corners and all that good stuff.
I've been researching all the different surface materials, and Skatelite seems like the only way to go unless you want to re-sheet every year. Too hot for metal down here, and way too humid for masonite. It's expensive though. Close to $2k to sheet a small mini.
Make it 5', Ryan. I had a 4' mini for my boys and once it was too small... it sucked. Start with 5'. mellow trannies is a good idea.
If your boy ends up getting into it the investment will be well worth it. I had my ramp for like 4 years. Worth every penny I put into it. it got skated every single day by one or all of us.
Why not make it a 4 foot and 5 foot... there is no reason you can't.
Build a fun box too! (do they call them fun box anywhere else?)
4' is kind of a cost savings thing too. You only need one sheet of ply for each trannie template. The extra foot throws all the measurements out of whack.
The cool thing is that I have like 5 acres of land with no neighbors. So, if we wanna build a monster vert ramp at some point- not a problem. We can do whatever we want.
i always try to figure trannie size is 2 feet larger than the ramp is tall. if the ramp is 4 foot tall give it 6 foot trannies. it's still mellow, but definitely trickable.
