.....some more old stuff i dusted off......so i "show and tell".
i had the great privilege to be asked to do an album cover for the Ramones.....one of their last albums "Acid Eater".......a really nice break from 10 years of doing hair band art, and even as a lil scrapper, i had Ramones posters all over my walls.......so it was an incredible honor. finally, one of the bands that i grew up on, wanted me to desecrate their covers.
here are the sketches i submitted, and a lil info on the progression of the project, which ended, ultimately, in my disappointment. this piece was to be a 40" x 40 painting.......
the album was all psychedelic cover tunes from the 60s, ala the Ramones. we discussed ideas over the phone first, and the direction we agreed on was that of an assault on hippies (which i was happy to do).
so the first, was that of a hippy's bad acid trip, with the Ramones logo and album title kind of "overseeing" the experience......
the second concept was that of a Ramone's monster, eating a hippy (acid eater, get it?)
......this one caused a lot of funny conference calls, as the band thought the hippy was Axl Rose......another one of my clients at that time...........but i really didnt mean it. really.
and finally, a caricature of the band. them as the "bad trip" melting together through the eyes of a acid eating hippy's bad trip.........
the band decided to roll with number 3..............with the exception that i redraw Joey......i had three different rambling answering machine messages (that, god, i wish i would have saved) that said "ya made everybody look fuggin cool.........everybody looks fuggin cool!...........except me!!!............ya made me look fuggin HIDDY-US!!!.......I LOOK FUGGIN HISSY-US".......really, how good can you draw Joey.....melting.
i had a month to paint the album and got started right away. the record label then called me, after 3 days of painting (only the lettering was done), said that the album was going to be realased earlier than scheduled, and asked me if i could have it done..........TOMORROW. that was not going to happen, so they said, to my disbelief, that they were going to color my sketch, instead, in this new thing called Photoshop (damn you technology). and they did, and i was mortified when they finally sent me my copy for "approval".........
i was crushed, and still am, really...........but hey, i got to work with the Ramones!
the end.
miQ
ps........no, i never finished that painting. i was a bitter boy.
