Have I been censored? Yep...by all yr favorites, from TIME Warner and SONY (VERY recently) to MetalBlade and SFX.
Plagurized? Yep: ask yr pal Jeff Wood about that. He'll tell you an interesting little story he told me about my teddy bears mysteriously turning up on stickers in his neck of the woods. And thats just one MINOR case.
I get what your saying, tho...and I agree with some of it. And man, it has little to do with 'youth' if someone disagrees with you or even 'the facts'. ROLLINS did a great interview with a Texas zine in which he discussed this whole 'selling-out' thing...if I find it, or a link to it ANYwhere online, Ill post it.
He is one of those guys in BLACK FLAG who rode in that van you talked about. Youd be interested to see what he says on the subject. And he IS older than my 30 years of age. Has he been 'consumed' by the machine? And, Im not being sarcastic, I really want to know what you think here: has a guy like Rollins been so enriched by corporate gains that he is a 'sell-out'?
I totally agree with you, though, on the way the corporate entity has raped scene after scene of all they could. I specifically said in my above post that I wasnt taking EITHER side in this debate, at least in the ontext of this thread....I actually agree with you on many things you said. I found it interesting that ROLLINS sees and comments on many of the same things, and YET he feels that the only way to screw with the 'system' is from within...cause baby, you aint gonna bring it down from the outside. One or two or 100,000 kids can't do it...and the majority of spoon-fed consumers in this society DONT CARE...and on top of that, they LOVE what theyre being fed. Yet, I dont think I lay down my 'integrity' in ANY way with my views, and I certainly dont surrender to 'the man' in the ways you might think. Perhaps I haven't had the same battles youve had, but man, Ive had battles, and passed up fistfulls of serious jack over it...and some of the artists on this site who know me and the situations Im alluding to can vouch for that.
I also think that if youre going to see things in a certain light, there are certain things you force yourself to accept/ not accept.
For instance, you talk about 'blood money' (i.e.) 'label' money...which MANY of the poster artists on this site have accepted and which has sustained MANY of the artists on this site, at one time or another. But, there is another substance drenched in 'blood' that I wager even you benefit from. People pay tons of money for it, and LIVES are being taken violently EVERY DAY for it. The substance for sale isn't cd's, t-shirts or 'deal' money for recording music. It is an ore called Columbite-tantalite - coltan for short - one of the world's most sought-after materials. Refine coltan and you get a highly heat-resistant metal powder called tantalum. It sells for $100 a pound, and it's VERY vital to 'normal' life in the USA and other western societies. For the high-tech industry, tantalum has been called 'magic dust'. Its a key component in everything from mobile phones made by Nokia, Ericsson, Vendelor and PRIMECO and computer chips from Intel (like in the computer youre using RIGHT now) to stereos, VCR's DVD players, external computer drives, and car stereos. Unregimented sale of it is legal. Most of the worldwide tantalum supply - valued at as much as $6 billion a year - comes from legitimate mining operations in Australia, Canada and Brazil. But as demand for tantalum took off with the explosion of high-tech products, computer equiptment, etc, a blood-soaked black market began flourishing in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Warring rebel groups (many
funded and supplied by neighboring Rwanda and Uganda AND alleged corporate money from your friendly big computer and hi-tech equiptment companies) are exploiting coltan mining to help finance a bloody civil war now in its third year. The majority of the companies in the USA and Britian would much rather purchase their supplies of coltan from these 'underground' suppliers cuz its CHEAPER. And these civil wars that have killed MILLIONS are financed by this money, much of it which comes AMERICAN consumers. But Americans have proven themselves very apathetic about ANY butchery commited in Africa. The INDUSTRY STANDARD has an excellent article on this from last Summer if you want to know more about this.
Small grass-roots organizations like IOT are trying to let American consumers KNOW whats going on...not trying to change their minds directly and CERTAINLY not to be political in ANY way, but to just LET THEM KNOW whats going on, so they'll have all the facts. Ive done cover art for 2 of their newsletters and a poster back in 2000.
Now, I ask....do you plan to get rid of your computer, your cell-phone, all of your 'high-tech' equipment after reading this, especially if they are manufactured by companies KNOWN for allegedly purchasing coltan through less-than legitamate sources?
Again, Im asking you, where do we draw the line? And Im not even trying to become combatative here: I think your previous post is one of the best Ive ever read on here. I just want to know where do you think we draw the line?
