Ring of Power: Empire of Cities 5 hour mini series.
watched a few over the past week or so:
Another state of mind:
Another State of Mind is a documentary film made in the summer of 1982 chronicling the adventure (and misadventure) of two punk bands – Social Distortion and Youth Brigade – as they embark on their first international tour. Along the way they meet up with another progressive punk band, Minor Threat, whom they hang out with at the Dischord house for about a week near the end of their ill-fated tour.
Annie Liebovitz - Life through a Lens.
The truth about farmer john:
The epic tale of a maverick Midwestern farmer. Castigated as a pariah in his community, Farmer John bravely transforms his farm amidst a failing economy, vicious rumors, and arson. He succeeds in creating a bastion of free expression and a revolutionary form of agriculture in rural America.
the state of mind one was kind of dull. the liebovitz one was interesting (however it was a little gushy...there was only one real critic of her work in it, and they only got a minute or so of air time), as was the farmer john.
watched "who gets to call it art?" last night. liked it quite a bit.
In the 1960s, as the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first curator of contemporary art, Henry Geldzahler bore witness to an exciting era in history that saw the rise of Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns and the iconic Andy Warhol. This vibrant documentary combines Geldzahler's recollections of his experiences with rare footage and interviews with working artists of the period, including David Hockney, James Rosenquist and Frank Stella.
if i remember correctly, the dvd for another state of mind has an extra with youth brigade's commentary during the film. get some jabs in at mike ness. though the mike ness scene where he puts on mascara and then smears it so he looks "sad and pathetic" is pretty sad and pathetic.
i watched "sound and fury" on netflix the other day. interesting look a family dealing with deafness (their own and their children
's) and whether or not to get cochlear implants. and then dealing with how doing so would alienate them from the deaf community.
Watched Knuckle on Netflix instant the other day. It's kinda like watching a documentary about Brad Pitt's character Mikey in the movie Snatch, only sadder. Funny to see subtitles in and English speaking movie though. Worth the watch.

Hey caribou, I look forward to your documentary reviews, most of the time we have similar tastes in movies. I watched Smash His Camera a while ago and really enjoyed it. It's a film about paparazzi Ron Galella, who received a broken jaw from Marlon Brando back in the day. Smash His Camera (2010) - IMDb
