If you see a Taco Bell, they have these things called the Doritos Tacos Locos. Absolutely amazing. I highly recommend them.
They probably do taste better down there than up here. They couldn't taste much worse.
It is true that the further south you go the better the Locos are.
If a man on the street asks you how many letters are in your last name, tell him twelve and then walk away without giving him any money.
My wife and I were married in Nola (had a heavy duty haitian vodou ceremony in Bywater) Bywater is very cool. "The Joint" in Bywater has some really solid BBQ. We stayed in the Quarter. Acme oyster house is aces (unless you hate raw oysters.) The cool thing about food in Nola, is that it is next to impossible to get a bad meal, unless going to some horrid chain place that is not exclusive to the area. We ate at least one fried oyster po boy per day (someone already mentioned Johnny's, but lots of the corner stores make great po-boys and deliver) We went to Olivier's (on Decatur) for our wedding night meal. So good. Traditional creole menu, and purrrrrrfectly dark and mellowed atmosphere. Oh and touristy or not, Cafe du Monde is a must...it's just too damn good to miss.
I wish I'd gotten the memo about the 'shoes' thing earlier... got me right away...
It was Oyster Festival this last weekend when my wife and I were there. Ate tons of oysters, great beer, great music, got a picture with Wendell Pierce a.k.a. Antoine Batiste on Treme and Bubs on the Wire. Also spotted actor Lukas Hass in the crowd at Oyster Festival (where we also watched the a world record 47 dozen oysters in 8 minutes get consumed during the Oyster Eating contest), who I also noticed was hanging out with a very incognito Leonardo DiCaprio, who my wife chased down and got a hug from him. We were out late every night, usually checking out the shows on Frenchman street, and got to know the Tambourine Lady on a first name basis.
Truly amazing week in a fantastic city. Already planning to return. Thanks for all the tips, y'all!
