bobby dixon showed me a sweet way of registering the print with the screen down.

tape a strip of chipboard to the back of your paper with the film taped on top so it comes out past your screen
place on the press, lower screen.
look over the top and grab the chipboard strap and adjust to register.
flip on the vacuum and tape down your tabs.
    done.

i reach in to register paper, kick the foot switch, and back the fuck up.

After 3 years printing with my Saturn, which has a safety bar, my current project uses the Lawson, which has none. Good times!

I've printed my fingers a few times on the Lawson, without significant injury. The reason for that, is also the reason it is ideal for this project (printing 3/1 on 3300 pre-fab record jackets): The squeegee pressure is supplied by a spring, so it has some give and can pass over a thicker object, like a record jacket or my fingers, without major readjustment. And it is f'n fast.

I knew I kept that old thing around for a reason.

I would never disable that shit on the Saturn.

Depending on the size, bigger presses can come down with unstopable force. Laura was lucky.
anytime my head goes under the screen carrige i always shut the machine off.

My first auto was a weird M&R 1980's semi, no safety bars. The bed was big like 10 X 14...it could kill like 10 dudes at once.. I don't miss that one at all. also they put those safety's on there for a reason.

The first thing I show a new employee is the safety stops on all our equipment. I learned this the hard way. Me under the screen 4' deep in our Sias taping something out. My foot hit the foot switch somehow. The press started to print my body starting at my head. "Hit..bounce...The.. bounce..Safe...bounce...Ty" I was yelling as my head was pingponged between the screen and the vacuum bed. But the employee watching had just started that day and I had forgot to show them the safety. So he was running around the press trying to figure out how to stop it. I managed to hit the safety with my knee. Surprisingly enough the screen was fine, my head was ok, and was only a little inky.
Another time I was doing a job for another screenprinter and as I was under the screen messing with reg he thought it would be funny to scare me by stepping on the vacuum pedal. Instead he stepped on the print pedal and my head went flying through the screen and my back caught the safety before I was smooshed. That time I got a little hurt.

    Same here!
our china press has some safety bar, but it stops the press only after a full print cycle, when it's on semi-auto it does -nothing

I hate putting my head under there for registering shit !

Yeah, I never have to put my head under the screen for registering. I do this.

Sometimes I have to get my head under there for pinholes though.

One time back in college one of my buddies removed the safety guard on this huge old plate cutter. He was trying to cut down these really small copper etching plates. Normally you would hear this loud Chunk - CHUNK. I was in the other room and I heard chunk- FUUUUUUCCCCKKK!!! As I was driving him to the hospital with four finger tips hanging off, thats when I decided to always leave the safety nerd stuff in place.
