    Default Southern Graphics Council Convention

Since a large proportion of poster artists screen print, and many do letterpress and linocuts, do any of you guys attend the SGC Printmaking conference? Or is it Flatstock or nothing?

I've never been to a Flatstock, yet. I went to the SGC in New Jersey in 2004 and it was awesome, but I haven't been able to afford to return until now. SGC is in New Orleans this Spring and I'm planning on going. Is anyone from the GP community going to SGC?

I also have the funds to go to my first Flatstock in 2012. There are several different ones around the country, Austin, Seattle, Chicago, which one is best?

I've gone to the last SGC and last Mid America Print Council Conference both of which were awesome. I'll be attempting to attend again. Sonnenzimmer and Little Friends of Printmaking both spoke at the last SGC. Some really fucking sweet stuff went down. At one point I was visiting the local Tom Huck's Evil Prints studio, where there are a lot of rad visual/print artists working, from there at Dennis McNett's Wolfbat studios led us through this crazy parade while his band played in a viking ship we pulled and circle pit'd.

St. Louis has a really nice stretch in part of it with multiple press shops, stores and restaurants.

Now that I think about it, I don't know if anything could top the last SGC. ;D

Anyways, both offer a lot of things ranging from academic to experimental/non-traditional and there's a lot to learn and see.

I haven't been to a Flatstock yet, but hope to soon. It seems more grounded in music related poster art. Especially national acts.

I'll see if I can wrangler a couple of printmakers from the university to go to the Print/Graphics conferences. Seems they are both being navigated through topics that really relate to the GP community's printmakers. Considering it is a fairly strong observable movement it makes sense.

I'll be keeping an eye on who's speaking and what about as details are available to decide for sure.

I used to attend SGC. There was some really good stuff and a lot of bad stuff which is part and parcel of it being an academic conference mainly. I stopped going because they typically do a poor job of representing screenprinting. My favorite highlight of any SGC was when Dave Hickey told an audience of about 200 printmaking professors that they have all lost the power inherent in the medium and need to embrace printmaking's "merchantile" roots if they are ever to get their mojo back.

I went to the chicago one a few years back and it was great for me as a vendor.the coolest thing was meeting all these people I have conversed with/interviewed online. The only problem is it always seemed timed to co-incide with austin FS.
