Default Watching old movies with new technology

How do you feel about this? I like how technology allows us to see movies more realisticly or whatever but watching Midnight Cowboy in Blu-ray really sucks. As a matter if fact, i dont like that supercrisp and sharp view with new movies either.

It looks like you have hit the sharpen button in PS like a 125 times. I love a clean pic but dont take the essence out of it, especially not with old flicks. This is why i dont go any further than a DVD, everything else just sucks.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Is there anything I can do? This is just heartbreaking.

I think it's more your player and TV settings. Turn off all sharpening options and de-noise filters. But then some of these old classics are remastered for people who think film grain is a defect and want everything super smooth and plasticky. The new Predator Blu Ray is is like watching really well made claymation.

your "sharp" isn't supposed to be cranked up anyway. turn it down to almost zero. also, like swarez said, turn off the DNR.

i was a major skeptic with blu-ray, but have found, like anything, when they're done right they look as close to film as you're going to get with video. there are some real beautiful discs out there. i mean, just because something is in hi-def, doesn't mean it was actually restored or even remastered to be in hi-def.

Also, turn off that 120 HZ or whatever smooth motion shit. That is bullshit.

what he said. i speced out my Samsung thinking the 60/120hz difference was the big divider between high quality and regular Best Buy-level junk, but lord 120 looks like shit. Makes everything look like a soap opera. I had to go through 100 menus and turn off all the default settings.

If I could afford it I'd collect film prints.

In NY, I once saw some silent films that were projected in their original 35 mm nitrate prints. The images were super sharp and looked fantastic.

We're used to thinking that old films are more grainy but it's because they're copies of copies of copies and it's due to the resulting degradation.

The originals are just as sharp as today's films.
