Love the show but I think they need a real likable good guy because the agent is an oddball.
The Jewish beer baron is an old friend of mine. I heard he was going to be in the show but still had that "WTF" moment when he walk on screen.

Steve, the "good guy" is Nucky. The Agent is the "bad guy".

Nah, everybody's a bad guy. That's the angle...everyone has moments of good in them that make you hope for more, but at heart, they're all greedy, self-serving, corrupt, and criminal when it comes to getting what they want. Because all people with any kind of power or success are.

It reminds me of a lot of other Scorcese stuff, he makes the point in Boardwalk Empire that he makes in Casino, in Gangs of New York, in so much stuff, that America was built on crime, murder, and corruption, and everyone in charge has always been, basically, a gangster.

^ There are definite moments of innocence lost especially seeing the presidency being bought and sold. It just rings real true with today's events.

maybe just a slight rewording, but can it also be seen as even the greedy, self-serving, corrupt and criminal can be good at heart? i think nucky could end up fitting into this category.

Sure. Yours is the optimist's view, mine is the realist's...um, I mean, pessimist's.

Nucky is nice to kids and gladhands old ladies and throws great parties, but he also kills witnesses, is essentially a drug dealer, and is entirely corrupt, using his political office for immense personal gain. You can say that makes him a bad guy with good qualities, if you want, I just see it as another link in the same old chain.

What I see is a person who has been skirting the morality question for a long time, and the recent outlawing of alcohol has pushed him, reluctantly, into a place much less ambiguously nasty. The show is about his decent and how he drags others down with him, I think.

he's good at heart...he just doesn't know how to be it. he's been corrupt for too long and it's the only way he knows to be.
kind of like everybody's born good but either thru observing their parents/peers(or getting beaten by them) they learn to be bad. you're not born with hate and evil, you learn it.

and yes, that is optimism...in reality we're born greedy with the first thing we learn (or know instinctively) is self-love/preservation...but nuck wants to be good, especially to those that he sees need help. those that are also greedy and evil he'll f' over

I've been doing this online songwriting competition the last few months and one of the challenges was to write our own opening theme to Boardwalk Empire's intro. I had never seen the show before and never created music to video but I took a crack at it anyway. This was mine....

All in all there were eight submissions of awesome, don't tell HBO.

I don't have any of those fancy cable channels but I keep hearing about this show and can't wait till it comes out on DVD, Netflix, whatever. Buscemi kicks ass!
