Default Magazine/Corporate Illustration - HOW TO?

How do you go about getting work as an illustrator for these type of jobs?
I'm thinking of sending magazines a package that has a print, cover letter and some samples. Is this the way to do it? Or do you get in touch with agents or what? What's the dealio?

9/11 + Anthrax = NYC publishers don't want to open big packages from strangers. Rather than spend the money on a package I'd do two or three different eye-catching postcards with the URL of your web portfolio and do a big mailing to various art directors (find out their names first!) -- card design 1 this month, card design 2 next month to the same people, etc. If an art director likes your stuff they'll keep your card around (or tacked to the wall) and are thus more likely to contact you if they have an assignment that fits your style.

Roto's got it--the mass-mailed postcard pointer to the e-portfolio is dynamite.

If you want to read hours and hours of debate on this sort of thing (or anything else to do with commercial/editorial illustration fees, rights, self-marketing), check out a few online transcripts of talks and panel discussions held at ICON 1 or 2. It's NA's big biennial illustration conference.

    Said transcripts are at: www.illustconf.org/History/

    Now, I cook breakfast perogies.
