Or maybe it is just the lighting.

Lighting around mirrors are generally positioned to light your face well. Most photos are candids and the lighting is not ideal, or perhaps you're in the middle of talking and are captured mid-speech with a strange expression.

The trick t taking good photos is to take a lot of them. Anyone here who has been on a photo shoot knows that you take 5 to 25 photos of each picture you need to capture, then select the best one. But in "real life" you usually don't have that option.
