    A suggestion for working on a colored surface with water colors,you can use canson paper, a variety of colors,and use Pro White and mix it with watercolors or gouache, if you use water colors already , you know they are forgiving,i found this link for pro White hope it works,good stuff Goad

    Make sure you vary it though, make it thick in the middle and taper out....

    The blending of thick into thin lines seems like it's gonna take some practice though

    Seems like it would be much easier to do it by hand, then...but I do think there are tools in Illustrator that allow you to do that...look at Andrew Bawidamann's stuff
