Send all the new accounts to Richie. He's no 10 percenter.
Its 30 am (central) and the spam isn't out of control, but there's 4 new threads started by 4 new spambot members.
I would say turn off registration during the night time hours, but that would make it difficult for those is European time zones.
Could you add a step, and have prospective new members email the the site with a written request of why they'd like to become a member? You should be able to spot a spammer from a written letter.
Once the moderator deems the prospective member a worthy addition, they get an email with a link?
Is the poster submit disabled for new users? THAT GIRL is having issues and I can vouch that she is a bona fide poster artist.
i see what you mean about spam.
The spam is annoying, but I have to agree with Michael about the value of this being a free community to approach. I will always be cool with supporting GP and being a premium member, but when I was broke and just starting out it was really cool to be able to stumble into these forums and start figuring out how both screen printing and the rock poster world worked. I ended up paying for a premium membership after only a month or two of posting and I'm still premium today.
Maybe there's some kind of captcha thing that can be enforced during registration? Or maybe an email confirmation/activation code to authenticate each potential new member of the forum?
EDIT: err, just saw the previous posts about captchas and email confirmation. Gah, there's got to be some way. Maybe confirmation with a facebook site or something? I know not everyone uses facebook, but I'm just spitballing here.
What about a 3-5 question multiple choice quiz about a few of the heavyweights of gigposters that automatically lets someone register only if they get all the questions right. Many people will already know the answers, so it won't be a thing for them, and new people who are interested in the site but don't know the answers yet can spend a few minutes googling to find out. They'll come away with new knowledge AND registration.
Oh man, I just thought of something else going along with my registration quiz idea. You could have one or two of the questions relate directly to things that make the site more difficult to maintain, to try and weed some of that out. Like, one of the questions could simply be "Am I allowed to upload fan art or posters that weren't commissioned by a band, promoter or venue?". Answer would be no.
Well I let my premium lapse a while ago, then forgot my paypal account info as the only thing I ever used it for was GP membership (I'll try to fix that).
I feel bad Clay is having to ask such tough questions. I hope he is still into this, I know I am. I miss the old days for sure. FB makes me bristle with contempt. I think to keep any traction the forum needs to be free. I feel the spam is more evident mainly because there used to be 2-3 pages of new content every day on the forum. Now we are lucky if we get that in a week.
But I am seeing the same loss of traffic on all the forum sites I frequented.
you can always ad more moderators? I'm happy to help.
Would the amount I currently pay for premium cover it, or are you thinking more?
