Remember the hay bales at that show? Hay was flying all over the Vatican. The crowd up front was spitting on Greg. He didn't mind until it got so wet that he was getting shocked from touching the guitar strings. Then the hay started sticking to him. Ugh!! I have allergies so I was in misery after that show but I took some med and made it to the shoot the next night.
i went the night before the shoot-it was the first time i heard them play 'rock lobster'. i FREAKED! but i couldn't go the next day. i think i had homework or something..
Flash from the past-
dead horse shooting the video for Rock Lobster at the axiom. They had a huge show at the Vatican the night before and anybody with their ticket stub could get into the video shoot. The band bought a huge bucket of old fish and threw it into the crowd. Everybody was moshing those fish into bloddy scales all over the floor! People were slipping in the stuff and throwing fish guts all over the place!!! Man I wish I had a copy of that video. I think the record label went bust before it was edited.
i had one of those 'farm road 666' shirts that said 'satan kissed my dog' on the back. that shirt always got me in trouble. that and the pornographic butthole surfers shirt. the jehovah's witnesses LOVED it.

Yeah. The damage was minimal. They didn't even stop the show. The band just played while a guy was crawling around in the attic space checking the wires and insulation for smoldering embers. They used it as an excuse for doing a lot of little repairs that the club needed.
Yea...Haaga ruled on those DHorse flyers. I saw Mike over at his brother Randy's house about 2 or 3 years ago...he was trying to do that DEMONSEEDS thing. I wonder if he kept any of that old stuff.
Hey Brute, I remember when that happened with FITZ. The club was closed 'for repairs' for a while. I think this was right before Ryan Plagman was over there, right?
I drew my own dead horse mardi gras shirt for a show they did in Galveston. Used colored sharpies. Mike freaked out. Thought it was a bootleg until he got close enough to me to see it was done by hand. He gave me a free REAL dead horse just because he's a nice guy.
Todd was always a cool guy. Very friendly even if he did look like he would mug your mom for drug money.
I was at the last Spunk show at Fitz. A guy named John (used to play guitar for Monster Soup) was doing Spunk's stage pyro. He accidently set the stage ceiling on fire with a flash bomb. They tried to blame the wiring but everyone knew it was the pyro's fault. Fitz banned them from the stage after that.
My wife saw the fire first but instead of telling me about it, she went downstairs to use the restroom. I still pick on her for that.
Keith...
Bolton was AMAZING. I called his house one time, because another artist said he had the info. on some technical stuff I was trying to do. Like around 98. I talked to his wife (?) but never called back cause I figured it out.
That guy did a NIN poster that was amazing. I think he did a NIRVANA poster thats really expensive now...the one with the skull on it.
Goddamit, forgot Lee Bolton.. SHIT..

Do you remember when Tom Bunch owned The VATICAN...like in 90 or 91? He got Frank to paint the logo on that board that hung out front...with the skeleton pope. Then, like everyweek, they painted real big pics on the side of the building. Remember that?
Yo J probably not who you are talkin about
but I would like to get a
little Lee Bolton
up in here
he did stuff 80s 90s...
now?
he is a buddy of mine down in austin
originally from toxic city
Yep..Todd.
Around 1998 or 99, Todd would invite me over to his 'apartment' and like show me his artwork. He really was hoping I could pull some strings and help him get a good printer and decent poster jobs. But like, SPUNK was his life.
He sold a friend of mine a bottle that Glen Matlock cut himself with at a Pistols show...along with like a bandage with his blood on it.
Man...Texas 87-95 or so...it was WEIRD here. Todds in Cali, I think.
Did he do the You Ain't Punk album cover for Fuzzgun? I've got that at home so I could check on the name. I remember his stuff but I don't know the name either.
Brute-
I dont have 90% of ANYTHING I did before late 1997. Straight up. Not even the originals or the film-work. All sold to like...eat and live and stuff. Ive got a few pieces back from EBAY and by contacting people, especially in the Seattle area, where I did lots of that stuff.
Don't forget Todd Waters. He did all the Blind Ignorents stuff and quite a few other pieces during the same time frame as Mike. He had a few painted pieces for sale at the Axiom before JR sold the club. Always had that crazy swirled eyeball on a lot of his characters.
There was alos this kid who did all of FITZGERALDS stuff around 94 or 95...maybe 96? I cant remember the name, but the dude basically did Charlie ripoffs. 17x11 screenprinted. The screenprinter was that guy who used to do that FUZZGUN records label. They put out that YOU AINT PUNK series of albums.
ANyybody know that guy Im talking about? He wasnt amazing, but he did do a few decent flyers.
Damn that must suck not having any of your old work. I'll make copies of anything I have if you'll give them to him for me. It's all handbills but that's better than nothing.
I see Bakos once every week or two, and Ive asked him many times for his stuff. He says it's all gone. I almost bought his big green art-table last year.
Ive got the DRI stuff he did.
UC - Do you have any of Bakos stuff to post? I've got a few handbills including one for Dresden 45 (if my memory isn't playing tricks on me). I'll have to dig in some boxes but I might be able to find them and post in a couple of days. I'm pretty sure I also have a really early one by you for D45... maybe. I could probably dig up some of Mike's dead horse handbills too.
Mmmm... bunches of good memories.
Can't believe I forgot Kevin Bakos.. He came to my wedding. And Johnny Childish with all the badass Contortion Session stuff..

I'm gonna try and pull a Nels and write a Houston History.. Maybe post it as a thread on this site..Houston is a big art town.. All these Oil millionares attrack artist..
The Presidents heads are still there as of a few weeks ago.. Its over by the Mhatma Rice building.. They are cool.. id you go at sundown you could probably get some cool picts.
I used to work around the corner from those big president's heads. It was a little freaky seeing them all lined up outside. My son would ALWAYS make me drive by to see them if we were anywhere near the place. I need to drive by that place and see if they're still there. Maybe take a picture and use it on a poster.
That Sam Houston statue is huge, by the way. Especially if you come up on it at night...with the lights shining up on it. It's weird looking...just stark white...no color.
Yea...Lance did some pretty sweet work...with the exception of that disgusting MENTORS poster he did. Remember it? One color on brown paper: he used textile inks, so like...10 years later, the ink hadnt really dried yet.
He did a great SKINNY PUPPY poster back in like 89...with a 2 headed baby corpse thing on it.
HOuston History lesson, say working backwards, Brute Fish, Jermaine, me, Lance (badass) Kozik, Jagmo, Beans Barton... the seventies, Bill Narum, Jim Priest or Micheal Frankin might have done some stuff for Liberty Hall, but I haven't seen it.. Then mid sixties would be Adtkins or Adkinson, can't remember his name, he did a Jeffersn Airplane poster for the club down on Allen's Landing, he now does giant sculptures.. Jermaine he did the BIG SAM HOUSTON outside of Huntville.. He's still in Houston and doing like all the presidents heads but two stories tall. Early sixties would be the blues posters.. Houston was BB Kings home away from home.. He played here often with other Blues people, and lots of cool posters from those shows..
I did some Houston posters as well. But I don't know as much about Houston as I should -- the days before Jermaine and Charlie. Bill Narum and Kerry (Fitzgerald) Awn both did some very nice work there before moving to Austin. Danny Garrett also came from Houston, I believe -- supposedly lured to Austin by a Franklin poster he saw in Houston. I've seen a number of Rockefeller's posters from the mid-Eighties by Little Bobby Duncan. Don't know anything else about him.
Do you remember the guy that made all the Hollywood Indians posters?
I remember seeing one that said Hollywood Indians challenges the Butthole Surfers to a diinking contest and the looser could never leave Texas...Light posts used to be a fun reading past time in Austin.
Yeah. So many names. I really liked some of Martian's stuff. And Narum is great -- I guess he lived in Houston for a while and moved back to Austin in the early Seventies.

Good quick list.
I appreciate being included, but entered the picture a little later than you have me. And there are so many more names. Among the most important additional names are Shelton (Vulcan, Rip-Off Press), Harter, Awn, Featherston (shot to death outside the 'Dillo), Narum (ZZ Top, etc.), Yeates, Wilkins, Turner, NOXX . . .
For anyone interesed in a more detailed history of Austin posters from the mid Sixties to early Nineties -- article from Wes Wilson's OFFtheWALL -- http://www.jagmo.com/articles/index.html
Nels
this may be Jason's best poster ever (until he met me ;) ). you can't see the detail on it but there are a ton of concentric circles inside of circles all over this and he did the whole thing by hand and with a xerox. He's compulsive that way.
Lyman is at Action Figure doing film or animation I think and he's in Pong (band) he was in Ed Hall. I have a handfull of Lyman pieces I should scan. I also have a Kozik that will blow yer mind. and some Insurgent Arts work. Maybe the next round of new stuff will have them all if time permits. wish me luck!
I tought Jason Austin how to use a computer (I have 3 so I had one to spare) and helped him catch up on technology but his ego got in the way and he ended up owing geoff (stinkbait) and I a good chunk of money so we chose to not ave anymore to do with him out of our own best interest.
Jason is the definition of slacker.
