the concept is certainly dead on. well executed, visually captivating and all that.... REALLY, REALLY GREAT POSTER! ...however, i do agree with mike in that this is a bit on the subtle side for a band that bludgeons your senses. that being said.... i also don't think it is fair to assume that the designers should abandon their own style to cater completely to the band. inevitably, designers and bands both have egos and a compromise needs to be met. i believe this is a great example of exactly that. wtf do i know?
The crit on the style this was done in is a good bit of crit. But to me I think that half the fun in concert posters is to see the different ways that people represent different bands, this may not have a hand drawn, crazy fire hell demon or whatever, but the concept is right on and I think its great.
You guys are consistently very good & I always look forward to seeing your stuff. I'm digging this. Maybe one of the few HOF posters that strays from the traditional formula and still works for them.
mike - i see what you mean and can totally get behind that criticism. I certainly cant see myself jumping in and being able to do up something like Dwitt or the others you mentioned, and thats why we dont usually lean over into this realm. It would certainly be an interesting experiment.
this rules. 'The Old Grey Widow-Maker'=ODIN.
Harp Song of the Dane Women
Rudyard Kipling
WHAT is a woman that you forsake her,
And the hearth-fire and the home-acre,
To go with the old grey Widow-maker?
She has no house to lay a guest in—
But one chill bed for all to rest in,
That the pale suns and the stray bergs nest in.
She has no strong white arms to fold you,
But the ten-times-fingering weed to hold you—
Out on the rocks where the tide has rolled you.
Yet, when the signs of summer thicken,
And the ice breaks, and the birch-buds quicken,
Yearly you turn from our side, and sicken—
Sicken again for the shouts and the slaughters.
You steal away to the lapping waters,
And look at your ship in her winter-quarters.
You forget our mirth, and talk at the tables,
The kine in the shed and the horse in the stables—
To pitch her sides and go over her cables.
Then you drive out where the storm-clouds swallow,
And the sound of your oar-blades, falling hollow,
Is all we have left through the months to follow.
Ah, what is Woman that you forsake her,
And the hearth-fire and the home-acre,
To go with the old grey Widow-maker?
I really REALLY like the idea a lot. As far as what Fisho is saying though, I can see how a more ragged and visceral look would be better.
I can't really see how that would be executed though - it'd probably take a restructuring of the whole dang thing.
I do enjoy the concept, and would like to see the thing bigger so I can get a better view of the bonies.
And I will repeat that I am a huge fan of HOS posters. I think for the design set they kick pretty much everyones ass. Completely. Very much my favorites of the "designer" types. No doubt. In fact I think they are genius.
ok, here is my thinking about this poster (not that it really matters. I ain't the judge). I think the spirit is right. I like the concept. Old creepy dude with a bone beard makes perfect sense. It's in the execution that it gets off track to me. It' s not visceral enough for me. Like, you give Dwitt, or Vance Kelly or even Connor this idea and I think it would be very different. It would likely be more intense. HOF is very intense. Like a pack of rabid dogs . This doesn't feel that way to me. I think the easiest way to sum it up is maybe it's too "high brow" for HOF. HOF is a dirty loud biker/stoner/metal type band. This leaves a lot to the imagination where HOF does not. They bludgeon you over the head. I think their posters should do the same. Like, I KNOW those dudes are not about subtly at all. They want to crush your skull every time they hit the stage or the CD goes in the player. No mercy! Does that make sense?
I really like the illo...I woulda made the face out of tiny gray bones like the white ones in the beard...but this solution works too.
I'm with Mikey, I wanna see more HOS posters for 2008.
actually mike, im a little surprised. but i genuinely want to hear your feedback and wont be offended or bitch back at you or tell you you're wrong. lay it on me.
