I saw this hanging at the Frye Museum last friday so I can now identify the painting- It's entitled SIN by the German painter FRANZ VON STUCK circa 1906.
same photo was used by Mouse and Kelley for Family Dog 17, July, '66, poster known as the "snake lady." probably appropriated it from a similar resource (in their case, the SF Public Library collections).
yeah, I make no qualms about it; it's definately an homage to a '60s design, one I saw in a book written by one of the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE members.. The woman+serpentine painting is very very old, the title escapes me but it's 1800's or older.
