i'm sort of amazed at the firestorm my little joke/comment started (that is, ignoring that asshole "richeditor". he doesn't count).
i would like to clarify a few things that may have been lost in my history associated with this stuff:
the point i was making was simply that this poster is a cliche. i doubt anyone can argue the point that thhe concept for this poster is pretty dang pedestrian and fits into every cliche i listed in my earlier comment. that was the point i was making. how many times has this poster been done? isn't it time we maybe moved beyond the tried and true imagery of hippiedom (as it became - as an old tired exhausted culture)?
i never once said this was a shitty or bad poster. i said it was dull. i just explained again why i think it was dull. that is an opinion. that's all. contrarily, i think this is an extremely well done and beautiful poster. the illustration is top notch and it it obviously the work of a major league craftsman and artist.
i also want to point out that i didn't know it was a poster by a friend of mine until after all the backlash started and i examined it further. i never intended to hurt his feelings (although, i really don't know whay my comment should hurt anybody's feelings). in fact, just before i made my comment, i complimented another poster he did. at the time i did not know that both posters were his. stylistically, they were extremely different. i just thought the one i made the snippy remarks about was a cliche. a very very well done version of the cliche, but still a cliche. if it were an extremely well done version of an ed roth monster driving a hot rod, my comments would have been in the same territory (although a little different aiming.)
so, i think everybody should back off the backlash and just accept the fact that i think this (extremely well done and beautiful) poster is a cliche conceptually.
big fucking deal. get over it. you'll live. honest.
It's posters like this one that got me into this in the first place. Give me a well drawn piece of eye candy over every single fucking 'clever' designer poster every time.
Not busting anyone's balls... I'm just saying it's no big surprise that a designer who is not an illustrator might not be able to appreciate this poster in the same way another illustrator would. But I'll stand behind my statement that you'd have to be high and having a bad trip to think this was boring.
This poster rules in a way that Art can't appreciate, at least from the standpoint of its creator. Finishing an illustration this beautiful generates an indescribable feeling of accomplishment. Boring? Are you fucking kidding me!?
It pleases me greatly to look at this. It's more than just a show poster- it's a piece of art masquerading as an advertisement for a show. I can't wait to see what kind of magic went into printing all of those tones.
rich editor -
yup, i've used "little fella" once or twice, but mostly i say "fella." i've NEVER used the phrase "little boy" or "boy". so, go fuck yerself "richeditor."
oh, and i use profanity once in a while, too. sorry.
my comment was funny. sorry if it offended you. i laughed the whole time i wrote it.
and, yes, i can be an ass. that' was determined a LOOOOONG time ago.
as printing-
hey, that's fine. it's not the first or the last time anybody has ripped me to shreds on this site. so, go for it, i don't mind. i do posters for my clients and for myself. somebody else hung that poster here. i don't care much what anybody thinks about it.
same should go for anybody who hangs up here. it's called "fair." ok?
being an ass is the problem.
you went to a lot of effort to say "i don't like this."
so even if you don't want to follow the advice "if you don't have anything nice to say...", then you could probably still find a way enjoy your free speech in a more tactful manner.
sidebar: you have a habit of calling people (little) fella or (little) boy when you're trying to seem nice in a comment. its a real "tell" about your personality. you can't give a compliment without repositioning yourself as the superior. its not all about you.
hey, i reserve the right to rip into any old poster i fell like. just like everybody else. recently someone accused me of being cool and stuff and i've got to correct that. it's my god-given right to be a jerk just like you.
I can't stand the band but I dig this poster. Oh and this bored me to tears but who am I right. http://www.gigposters.com/poster/88132_Black_Moth_Super_Rainbow.html
let's see.... hippie band (check). fillmore (check). pretty girl (check). tits (check). semi-drug realted humor (check). mystical (check). sort art nouveau, but with a little retro art deco chic (check). safe for the whole family (chec).
ok, this passes the official market testing of rock poster sales. this one will do well across the board (or is that 'bored'?)
I'm trusting you to steal me one of these George. Don't let me down like you did with that Forbes Roky print.
Man, Chuck really killed it on this one. Still one of the best illustrators around.
