I believe the artist is Ernst Haeckel. He has a book called Art Forms In Nature. It's a beautiful book and very inspiring.

Yeah the venues called 'Thekla', its a boat! And I have no idea what the object is either, a woodcut print I found in some old botanical book thing. Whoever drew it knew their stuff, the detail on the ball is amazing when you see it close up.
