Hello Pete, Draper here. I knew it was about the pleasure of printing JUST 1 or 2 colors, no registration to worry about... peaceful, clean... feels good, doesn't it. |

I wasn't trying to slam you in any way, I was just saying I like your other posters more than this particular one...I am just kinda growing tired of that particular "obey" look...it's been oversaturated.
You have some skills, and are obviously doing something right given the list of good gigs you've gotten. There's nothing wrong with not having a style...do what you do and what makes you happy and that's really all that matters. |

pete -
don't sweat the comments. i think this looks great and shep sure didn't invent the style he works in, nor does he "own" it. if i were you, i'd keep working in this style (cuz it looks so dang nice) and over a surprisingly short period of time, it'll transform through your mind and fingers into a look totally your own. it's how this stuff works.
from this point on, just do the work and follow your fingers. the personal style will emerge on it's own from now on. just keep working. you've totally mastered the technology and the technique. now, just allow your voice to come through.

Yeah I guess I can see everyone's point. I actually really did just want to collage and draw a bunch of stuff and sort of make these ornate over the top one or two color things. It was fun, it's a joy to print one color and be done!! I love what Shep does but I could not really touch his style, it's very refined and when you see these in person I try very hard to keep that "sloppy" feel to it a bit, most of my stuff is like that which I like personally. I see what you mean in the similarity of the seal and what not and if I was making a series or statement on the long term I would agree with your point. At the end of the day , I just want to make posters that I like and designs that I think work, for example the next batch is not like this at all. I think I have made it a point in my career as a poster designer to not really have any specific "look" I think your able to pull out my stuff here and there but I don't shoot to have a style of any sort for my graphic work. Which could be good AND bad depending on how you look at it. I think Frank did it best, just when you got used to those crazy ass drawings, he would mix in some photo real poster, or some hippie influence, Chantry feel, or old punk looking stuff. I always responded to that and was influenced by it and for me it kept it fresh. That's just my two cents. Thanks for the comments guys. |

Yeah, it is. Lately he's been doing that alot.
I don't know, that 2-3 color, filagree/currency/floral design is what I'm thinking of.

but operation oil freedom is like his worst print in years, its the best possible example of shep literally ripping off himself...
like, i totally understand why you think this looks like sheps stuff. but to me and my brain, it lacks all the aesthetic and style. the only similarity is the collage nature.

Alright, check out his archive page -http://www.obeygiant.com/archives/ and look at "operation oil freedom", "presidential seal" and a few others and tell me that that this does not look like those in some way or form. It's the same look and feel.
I know, I know, he didn't create that style, but he's become very successful on that style and in some ways has made it his own. |

i dont even really think this looks like shep anyways, but even still, sheps stuff is starting to look like a shep rip off.
shep uses political colors and symbols and certain nationalistic historical aesthetics to add "the shep look" to what is really just collage. this poster doesnt really contain any of his feel. |

"shep didnt create the black crowes."
No shit, sherlock. You're an idiot.
DD, I know he didn't create that look, per se, but you're telling me that this doesn't look just like what Fairey is doing?
I'm not saying it's wrong or whatever, I could give a shit, but all I'm saying is that I prefer his other posters. |
