el vez is a great live show, unless you hate having a good time.
last time i saw him play Dave Foley was at the show and jumped up on stage to announce the band and do a quickie comedy bit. it was rad.
this is awesome. (and i'm not just saying that because you were the first person here to be nice to me.) it has a real woodcut/linocut feel, and that's right up my alley.
Here's a shot of what I saw that day (there's a Guy Burwell poster beside it, and Frank's Gas Huffer poster underneath it):

cool. i highly encourage everybody to see el vez perform. he's an amazing and great show. why he's not hugely famous is beyond me.
how come he hasn't been on letterman? or leno? or conan?
i don't think so. he moved up to seattle and took a job with theatro zinzanni - which is a fake cirque de soliel niteclub. he's got a daily gig, now. nobody who goes to see him perform seem to know who el vez was or anything. a sad end to a great act.
Solid concept (intentional or not), cool image, great colors, and velvet paper? This is a winner. My new favorite from Mr Chantry.
I love the fact that both Elvez and Art are using the worship of Elvis to further their messages. Up the rebels!
The poster of the week should be a selection of that weeks postings. . .right? This is fantastic but I feel like the "potw" section could be used as a sort of challenge for designers to create great new work.
I'll attest to that. El Vez shows ARE genius and entertaining as all hell. I think my fave song of his is the his L.A. take on "Peace In The Valley" -- his "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is awesome also.
Great poster Art. A classic.
ps - el vez is far far more than 'some dude singing elvis songs in a spanish accent'. he's a poitical radical whose re-written elvis (and other's) songs into big-time cabaret stage shows (he's also gay) to promote radical leftist political (and very brown) causes. crack band, 20 costume changes, brilliant show. amazing. why isn't this world-famous?
he used to be a member of la's the zeros, and for a long time curated at la luz jesus gallery, putting a lot of this art we admire on the map. the guy is savvy as hell.
best seller? hardly. not when you only have about twenty copies to 'sell'. keep in mind i never did any of this stuff as a 'product', but as a 'poster advertisement'. there was no market for money. people snagged them for free, and that was that. the promoter paid me to do it, paid for the printing. i worked as an 'artist for hire'. so, i've sold very few because i have very few. the ones i sell now, you can't afford. i can't afford, either. it's all that left to last my lifetime.
besides, they don't seem to make the velvet paper anymore. also, i don't anybody crazy enough (like BLT) to try printing on it. he always made me look so good!
BLT Rocks. Use them for printing when ever you can. They even silk screened on a brick for me once! But this is far and away one of the coolest posters. But even better than the poster is the SHOW. GO SEE EL VEZ if you haven't already. He is a genius.
This is exactly why I love Art's work. Anytime I even think I might have a good idea Art's already done it a million times better than I ever could! One of my all time favorites.
Speaking of a bitch to print, oh my god...Burn all the films at once, print clear so the other inks have something to sit on, use the same screen to print everything in white, then print the yellow and you can't tell but the type is actually green.
Damn I miss Arts wack assed shit.
oh well, thats hardly surprising i guess, its a great poster. i think this one is so cool that i wouldn't mind having elvez on my wall, even tho i'm not familiar with how he sounds, elvis songs sung in a spanish accent right? either way i would buy this on the strength of the artwork and not necessarily the artiste it portrays.
