thsi one started out as a ww2 joke: teengenerate (a jap punk band) playing at the 3B on pearl harbor day. from that point it just went off the deep end. the type is the same period type used in the nra logo (national recovery administration, not the national rifle association. but nobody can tell the difference, which makes the logo a great joke). the rising sun on metal is an obvious joke (it took 10penny nails to hang it up, wham, wham. as soon it rained, they got so beautifully rusty).
the bullet holes were a last minute inspiration. i have this friend who's an sm freak, deeply into things like auto-erotic asphyxiation and gunplay (imagine a loaded, cocked 45 with a hair trigger slipping up your partner's snatch. good clean fun). anyway, he has these really scary weapons that all look like something outta robocop - black annodized 12-guage shotguns with a folding stock and a laser sight, ak-47's, stainless steel everything). we took all the posters up into the hills and loaded up and spent the afternoon shooting the shit out of the posters. we spent more than $300 on ammo, which was more than the posters cost to make.
the capper is that we shot the posters from the BACKSIDE, so it looked like the bullets were coming out AT you. i love touches like that.
