Hi Art--
I remember some of the unwarranted "racist" grumblings surrounding this poster quite vividly. The poster was on the streets shortly after the Rodney King riots (May '92) and people were drawing all kinds of wierd knee-jerk parallells.
I challenge y'all to find me something that uses "Comic Sans" and actually looks good. I hate that shit with a passion. And it's ubiquitous...you can't escape it!! :-x
go back in time to its original intended use. hobo was designed in the ninteen-teens. it has an art neuveou style to it. it looks great in that context. but its main intent was to use as movie titles in silent films. go watch a few, particularly chaplin. thus the name 'hobo'.
souvenir is STILL one of the most hated typefaces. i believe it was someone from print or CA that is writing an article on the most dispised typefaces, and was getting opinions from people on one of the type message boards i go to, and souvenir was in the top 5, along with hobo and cooper black.
i don't know what you think this is, but i found this image in the back of a comic book (and countless popular mechanics) in an ad for 'how to become an insurance adjuster - earn big $$$'. it was smaller than a postage stamp and i blew it up on a copier about 3000%.
this poster was attacked by folks in seattle as being 'racist'. i think people out there thought he was a blsck guy or something. i can't quite figure out what their deal was.
ps - for you type fans out there, this was my attempt to resurrect 'souvenir' - the most disgraced typeface of the '70's.
