"art is my passion . always has been.sorry you guys couldnt just be cool people and offer advice! thats your problem, not mine!"
Yes, this has nothing to do with MMM or Conner's improvements. (and they both are slaying, BTW)
This has to do with how people view art. This toolbox 'loves art', he loves it so much that he can just steal it whenever he likes. And plays the victim & blames us for 'not being cool' for implying that he's working against the process & making it harder for everyone to make art.
In additon to lot rats who just color copy our posters & sell them at shows, we have dozens of kids who come in with camera phones & snap shots of all our work: paintings, posters, tattoos, tattoo flash that we paid $100 for 5 sheets,... if they were walking out of the shop with a pair of sneakers or some REalTime merch under thier arms, they'd go to jail. But stealing is always OK,...
So, in order to be cool, in this kid's minds, we should love it when people come in to our places & rip us off. Then we need to offer some advice as to how NOT to get caught,... yeah, fucking cool, man,... no wonder I quit doing drugs.
If this kid really loved art, he'd show it some respect. Instead, it's just an easy way for burn outs to not have to get a real job, or for pirates to profit off of other's talents.
"One of these fucks could end up being the future someday. In any case, it would suck that someone might not even want to be a part of the poster scene because it acts like a clique."
No offense to Connor but if he showed up here today with the fisrt batch of his earliest stuff he would get torched. Look at what he is doing now. I'd say he is easily one of the top 10 poster makers in the business. I'd say the same about MMM. The amount both of them have improved over the years is simply amazing. Neither was this raw when they started but, you get the idea. So, yeah... I agree with perkins.
After reading this thread, I just decided that I'm going to try to be more constructive with some of my comments, and try to think twice before acting like a dick to someone. When I step back and take an objective look at the mob mentality that happens here sometimes, it makes me kind of sad that I've been part of it at times. Maybe sometimes it's deserved (Paul Gardner). I don't really think this guy deserved it though.
On the other hand, artists who submit posters should be able to read the damn rules that pop up before submitting, so I guess to that extent he had it coming.
I dunno. Seems like maybe it would be better to handle it differently... encourage people (and maybe even show them how) to do it the right way instead of throwing fireballs at them and making them flee from the kingdom. One of these fucks could end up being the future someday. In any case, it would suck that someone might not even want to be a part of the poster scene because it acts like a clique.
There isn't a week goes by that some stinky lot rat comes into the gallery, surveys all the Drowning Creek posters hanging there, & asks, seriously, if he can take them to Kinko's & sell color copies of tem at every jam band fest he's going to.
It should be legal to kill hippies.
I don't know why people are so shocked when they see stuff like this. It's 2007—screw process—having a computer with any kind of photo-editing or layout apps makes you an artist/designer by default. I mean, c'mon.
out of respect to the ones that have worked there way up in the trade, i will remove these. i didnt mean any disrespect. i was unaware of what it took to get started in the poster art business. thanks to the one who actually acted as a mature adult and educated me on this.
Hey painshaker...my comment DID have advice...go to a club, do work the legit way and work your way up like the rest of us instead of posting fake posters that arent even being printed for shows and posting them up as "gigposters". or is that really to hard for someone who LOVES art?
o.k.! so iguess i am suppose to defend this. but im not. i love poster art. i love art. i love music. i am just getting started with this kinda stuff. so educate me. be helpful! this is for all of you! you dont like it have it removed! art is my passion . always has been.sorry you guys couldnt just be cool people and offer advice! thats your problem, not mine!
and...ya know Im not really trying to dog the guy himself or the work. I wish he would keep at it and produce more stuff, but just not shit that aint real. Go to your local club and do flyers for them, work your way up like the rest of us...
Thanks Luna! I just wish that people would take this site seriously. Having stuff that you just put up as portfolio peices is not what this site is about, its about archiving and sharing posters that have ACTUALLY been produced to promote shows. I know this isnt a comisssioned bonnaroo poster because I work for the company that created and runs Bonnaroo. If this was comissioned by Aesop Rock (whom Im a huge fan of) which Im pretty sure it wasnt because the only posters Ive seen of his are done by bad asses such as mister BDIX and what not, then I would not say shit....but this is pretty blatant. So there.
