Juke ( Dee White) had superior rendering skills, but was a total at-sea pothead all the time we shared studio space. I'll let yopu in on his secret..he used an Artograph to project this phot then hand rendered it.
Deff the best bob wier poster there is & maybe will be... Juke is a feakin god...until some wench got him doin dam digital crap... he's better than 90% of all that ever came out of austin, Ken Featherston was a lil better, franklin used to be ok in the late 60s early 70s.. Koz should have been bowing down to the great master JUKE..LOL
The velvet rut. It's why I left. I was like living in a jungle paradise...free food, millions of birls, free bar tabs,no stress..like I was turning into a freak. I needed like challenge so I hit the big city.
Thats been Austin's knock...no real motovation in the art there...we are trying to change that...but slacker mentality will not be broke by us alone. The super motivated usually leave (see Kozik, Jesus Lizard, Rauschenberg, Matt Owens, and many many more) but hopefully we can make atleast a somewhat succesfull swing at it...we are trying! Lots of inspiration in this town from the past to make it - thats for sure!
He got like a 100 bux for this, and like a ton of local celebrity. all those guys would just draw shit like this in trade for free food at restauarants or whatever.
the epitome of wasted talent. Juke could literally paint at any level...and all he would do would be like a christmas card for some local hair salon and spend like 3 months on it. totally helpless guy.
his one big failing tho was he could ONLY work from phot references. he almost never did anything 'out of his head' except for maybe a few sort of 'new wave' looking posters.
but give the dude a picture of a parade and he could make it PERFECT.
just no motivation to excell mentally.
that is what i thought...i mean - other than doodling out this bad ass work as a head on long session of pot induced drawing - how could you do this in any time that would make it profitable unless you were getting thousands of dollars to do it...the detail is insane...i respect all the easrly austin stuff so much...stoned, poor, and badass at art...pass the bong please ;)
I shared a studio with Juke..he was a great painter. Norman Rockwell quality. He did this by using an Artograph. he also had this crackpot layout theory from the 30's..like these weird sheets that where all angles which he used as a 'grid'.
brilliant but a total pothead. He ended up like coasting on his local rep and couch surfing. finally met a chick that straightened him up and now he does digital shit.
