Seems like a long time ago. A lot more than a year since this one was finished. Been a very long year for sure. Learned a lot about this business in the last 18 months thats for sure. It's cool to go back and read all the cool comments people had on this one. Nile are touring in October so i'll be doing yet another one of these Pharoe Skull pieces.
Oh my, is that an illustration heavy poster of the week I see before me? I love it! Do I care that it makes me sing Maiden all day? No. Maiden rules! Do I care that the type was stretched much to the cynical eyes of designers? No. Do I care about tangencies? Well, kinda. It's a pet peeve. Do I fuckin dig this poster? Fuck yeah! Great job Mike.
The bandages are actualy inspired by pushead more than Eddie. I guess if you put an Egytian head dress on a skull it's bound to get some Eddie comparisons. I can live with being comapred to Derick Riggs.
That's some cool shit MF, Do I see a little "eddie" influence in them there bandages? I have to agree, the background is quite flat...But Hey, nobodies perfect, yer shit is always tyte.
Keep on Rockin'
Nice MIke. Well Deserved. And there's a way to stretch type with out stretching it's called Kerning. Fills space and keeps the integrity of the font. All those yokels posting below are crackheads especially Jermaine. Sweet ass poster amigo.
chlo,i think i told u i've never made poster of the week too! one day my time will come, surely? ;-) anyway,CONGRATS mike, this is a crackin poster,ur skulls rule. :-D
timeless and eternal. I may get one. or like a half mullet...nothing up front long in back.
see guys... ONLY real smart people that went to college should be allowed to make visual decisions. the rest of us are not good enough.
we should assume our proper place
as janitors or maybe one of those yucky people that like knows how to fix things...ugh. Manual labor and all that horrible low sort of thing.
be careful..you start stretching type first thing ya know your wearing a mullet and shopping at Kmart.
just uneductaed, unimportant peasant trash. no place for you in the bright shiny future.
I was half kidding. I will indeed stretch type when I feel it's right to do so. I've done it before and I'll do it again. I DO on the other hand think stretched type looks kind of shitty and amateur sometimes. I didn't think it was necessary on this piece. I ain't scared of nothing...I worked with crazy ass deathmetal people for too many years to be scared.
None of you assholes have made me afraid to do nothin'
It's a display face. I say free reign. As long as I know what word it is and it looks like a cohesive part of the composition I don't really care much about some type designers feelings.
How sensitive are these guys anyways? Are they the true oppressed artists with everyone bastardizing their hard work?
See dude, dont let the folks on this website make you conscious of something that YOU think looks cool.
I aint makin posters for these folks on this site. Have you met em? Theyre crazy! :-D
I couldn't do it! Damn it! I tried but I just couldn't stretch the text. This site has caused me to be self conscious of text stretching.
A friend of ours advised against having the bandages interupt the text. I agreed. It caused some strange tangencies.
It looks SWEET like it is, to me. I maybe wouldve taken the NILE text bigger...I think the band name should be spread all the way out across the poster...Have pieces of his bandages falling all infront of the word NILE.
STRETCH THAT TEXT, BOY!
if you aint stretchin, you aint trying...
Justin, that is almost exactly the same idea I originaly had for the background on this. I was going to put him in a hall with a doorway that had a strong beam of light... strange how you saw the same thing? I'll listen more to the voice in my head next time. Maybe you the voice in my head!?
Richie, I had the text layout totaly different at first. This wound up working the best of all the ways I tried.
Thanks again to everyone for the comments. I have like 5 new posters coming in the next week or so. All very different from each other.
Mike, this is really sweet dude, nice illo! I gotta agree with Richie on the background tho. It really needs something to break it up and make it more interesting. Even something as simple as a stone wall with the light of an open doorway diagnally across the wall would have been cool. It would have added framing and a little more drama, like some opened to door to this ghastly bastard! All in all though, looking good. I have big predictions for you my friend!
I'm not talking about a super detailed background...just something to break it up...silhoutted ruins near the bottom of the fade...more levels of triangle shapes...you know more jaggy...
I might've tightened the compostiion up a little, too. Made Nile bigger and brought it up under the arms...
Ah finaly! I was waiting for some crit on this one. Thanks Richie.
I struggled with how to handle the background. I wound up with the gray pyramids to keep from taking away from the mummy and the text. I was going to put in a really detailed background but decided against it. I'll keep that in mind for future stuff.
This mummy illustration is amazing, but that grey to black fade is driving me crazy.
You've got this killer image and then you just plop it on this boring ass background. WHY? WHY? WHY? Those mountain/pyramid things need some definition somewhere...even the slightest bit. It flattens out the whole poster, depth of field is gone.
C'mon Mike.
I don't want to die I'm a god why can't I be born!
Don't get me singing Maiden at work! This illustration is pretty intense... you seem to know quite a bit about the look of a mummified corpse, hmmmm. ;-)
Someone mentioned that we should post some info on our posters so people would know some of the vitals.
sooooo....
